Objective:To evaluate the efficacy of azithromycin (Z-Pack) in treating acute uncomplicated chlamydial infection of women with recurrent chlamydia in a tertiary referral center.

Design:Patients were randomized to either placebo (n = 15) or azithromycin (Z-Pack) treatment for 7 consecutive days. Primary end points were cure rates (defined as cure rates greater than 50% for cure rates greater than 100%) of recurrent chlamydial infections, defined as a new infection or an additional chlamydia diagnosis, in the absence of a chlamydia test (e.g., culture or PCR). Secondary end points included symptomatology and the use of azithromycin.

Setting:A tertiary referral center. We conducted a single-center, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group, randomized study to assess the efficacy of azithromycin in treating acute uncomplicated chlamydial infection of women with recurrent chlamydia.

Main outcome measure:Recurrent chlamydia infection, defined as the presence of at least 50% positive chlamydia test results within one year of the diagnosis of a chlamydia infection.

Intervention:A total of 1,633 patients were randomized to either a placebo or azithromycin treatment. The patients were followed for 7 days. Treatment was continued in a randomized sequence of dosing regimens.

A total of 1,741 patients were randomized to either a placebo or azithromycin treatment.

Primary end points were cure rates, defined as cure rates greater than 50% for cure rates greater than 100%.

The patients were followed for a mean of 6.2 ± 2.8 months.

Secondary end points were symptomatology and the use of azithromycin.

A total of 1,842 patients were randomized to either a placebo or azithromycin treatment. The patients were followed for a mean of 7.2 ± 2.7 months.

The patients were followed for a mean of 7.3 ± 3.3 months.
